Arous Elbahar’s mission is to advance the position and involvement of Jaffa’s Arab women, to provide them with the tools and resources to make a positive difference in their lives – personally, economically, and communally.
Our programme of financial education for young women assimilates financial education and develops economic empowerment from a young age among weakened populations – in order to have a long term impact on their lives in the future.
Our employment promotion programme, includes job readiness workshops, personal consultation and mentoring sessions, computer classes, professional training courses and business consulting for micro-businesses. The job placement rate for the women who came to Arous Elbahar seeking for employment assistance is over 70%.
In order to promote involvement of women in the community, our women’s club serves as a platform for a feminine discourse for Arab women. The group discusses issues which are relevant to the participants’ lives and to their personal development. Our activism group creates opportunities for women to use their leadership skills. Our Arab-Jewish women’s club enables women from different faiths get to know each other and cooperate. These programmes provide Jaffa’s women with useful tools, and create role models for the girls.
We have two social businesses, JaffaDolls and Arabic courses, which create job opportunities for women in Jaffa, enhance our sustainability and extend our activities and reach. The Arabic courses also increase understanding and recognition by the Jewish population of Arab language and culture, which generate a positive impact.
Arous Elbahar is a member of ‘Shutafot’, a coalition of eight feminist organizations that works as a platform for NGO activists and researchers. They share agenda and vision to promote social, economic and occupational justice for women.
